Photo Friday: Can you tell the difference?

February 27, 2015

On today’s video, on my NaturallyPhotographic channel on YouTube,  I am talking about how good photographs come from the photographer, not the camera.

Digital Rev has a series of videos in which they give a professional photographer a really cheap camera, and have them take pictures with it.  The resulting photos are always good, proving that the photographer is the key to better pictures; not the camera.

When people come up with “bad” pictures, they try to justify it by saying, “Well, I do have a cheap camera.”  This leads many people to believe that when they see really good pictures, it must be a superior camera.

On this video, I showed four photographs I took.  Two were taken with an SLR camera, and the other two were taken with a point and shoot.  I asked people to leave it in the comments which is which.  I’m going to ask you to do the same.  Here are the photographs.

Photo Friday: F-stop Video

February 20, 2015

A little later today, I will be posting a video to my photography channel on YouTube.  My video is going over some of the basics of what an F-stop is for, and how much control it gives you over your picture.

In today’s Photo Friday I thought I would show the three photos I took yesterday to use as examples.  I added the f number, and the shutter speed using Adobe Photoshop Elements 13, to illustrate how f-stops effect shutter speed.

Whacky Wednesday: 2 rules to a peaceful marriage.

February 18, 2015

As someone who has been married for over 20 years, I have been through the best and WORST of times.

On my wedding day my dad told me what he felt were the two rules to a peaceful marriage, and I have them written down above my desk.

Rule 1: The woman is always right

Rule 2: If the woman is ever wrong, see rule 1.

It has been the greatest source of laughter for me in over 20 years.  On those “rare” occasions when my wife really annoys me, I just take one look at that, start laughing, and I’m no longer upset.

Photo Friday: Making Up for Lost Time

February 13, 2015

snowy winter

Maine is well known for getting a lot of snow every Winter.  Four, or five feet is not unheard of, and it usually starts in December, and sticks around until the Spring thaw.

This Winter we didn’t see any real snow until the very end of January, with the storm “Juno”, and it hasn’t stopped dumping on us yet.  We have over four feet on the ground currently, and another storm starts tomorrow expecting another foot and a half; all this within three weeks.

I guess you can say nature is making up for lost time.

Solution to the Green Screen of Death.

As some of you may know, I bought a new computer last week, featuring Windows 8.1.  For the most part, I have been very satisfied with its performance, and ease of access.  I did have one problem that refused to go away, and my wife was experiencing the same problem.  When we went to videos, and pressed play, we would hear the video, but the screen was completely green.

Over the week, I tried different things to try to resolve the issue, and while I had temporary success, the problem would come back with a vengeance.  After looking up the problem on Google, and finding out that many others are having the same problem, so once I found the solution, I vowed to tell those others what I did in hopes that they would have the same success.

This morning, I found someone who gave an answer, and after trying it had very limited success until I added one last step, and as if by magic, everything works.  Here is what I did to fix it, and I hope you have the same success.

Drag the mouse to the lower left hand corner of the screen to call the Windows icon.  Right click on that.

Click on “Control Panel”.

Click on “Network & Internet”

Click on “Internet Options”

Click on “Advanced”

Under the accelerated graphics, check mark “Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering”

Scroll down to the security section, and check mark “Enable 64-bit processes for enhanced protected mode”

Click “Apply”

Click “OK”

Here’s the part the person left off that completes the process.  Restart the computer.

After all this, I checked every video site and they all work.

I hope this helped, and please share this so that others with the same problem can find peace of mind; or at least stop their wife’s nagging about fixing her computer. (Yes, this happened to me.)

enjoy.

Photo Friday: No Better Artist

February 6, 2015

One of the reasons; and I can say the main reason, I chose nature photography is that I have never seen a painting, sculpture, or the work of any artist that can come close to the beauty nature has given us.  Today’s photographs were taken at the marina behind our home.

During this time of the year, ice forms on the water, and with the rising and lowering of the tides, the ice breaks, and refreezes in very interesting patterns.  These patterns show a beautiful display of texture.

Here then are the two photographs I took this afternoon.

Whacky Wednesday: Frustrating Day

February 4, 2015

New computer drove me nuts,

Wife was being a nag,

I never realized technology and marriage could be such a drag.

I fixed all the problems with my new computer,

But the problems with my wife,

I found no way to mute her.
